Event Description:  The 30-year old spreadsheet is no match for the tsunami of information available to today’s investment professionals.  Analysts and portfolio managers unnecessarily miss impactful signals due to several factors including: inadequate tools, partial information, information fragmentation, lack of persistence, interpretative biases, and excessive noise.

A big data platform, by contrast, allows investors to persistently take in any data (including social networks), anywhere, anytime in a single HTML addressable format.  Cloud computing can then be used to optimize the data for the personalized investment context of decision-maker by reducing distracting noise and enhancing alpha-generating signals.  CEO Harry Blount will discuss real customer use cases demonstrating how big data platforms and cloud computing have helped institutional investors improve alpha capture.  (Note that this discussion is not focused on high-frequency trading).

About Our Speaker: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Harry Blount, co-founded DISCERN in 2009, based in part on a study done for the National Academy of Science committee on “Forecasting Future Disruptive Technologies” and his 20+ years on Wall Street with major investment firms such as Lehman Brothers, Credit Suisse First Boston, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and CIBC Oppenheimer.  Previously, Harry was named an Institutional Investor All-American in both Information Technology Hardware and Internet Infrastructure and a Wall Street Journal All-Star covering the Computer Hardware sector.  Harry is also the Chairman of the Futures Committee for The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California and the Silicon Valley Advisory Board to The Commonwealth Club.  Harry graduated from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in 1986 with a B.S. in Finance and has been a CFA charter holder since the early 1990s.
